After four months of tense negotiations, Central Michigan University and the American Federation of Teachers have reached an agreement on which non-tenure-track faculty members at the institution can be part of a collective-bargaining unit. Adjuncts who teach a quarter of the time or more are eligible, according to the agreement. Instructors will now get a chance to vote for union representation. Faculty members had rallies planned for today, but they were instead turned into celebrations of the agreement, the AFT reported.

it is about time adjuncts have a say in things.

The agreement discloses nothing to the reader. You are in the bargaining unit if you teach “a guarter of the time”. Without knowing the definition of “all of the time”, one cannot place the “quarter time” into an understandable context. If “all of the time” is defined as 12 semester hours, then teaching one, three credit course in a semester puts one in the unit. Since it is unlikely that a faculty person would teach less than one course, what the hell was the four month, “tense” negotiations all about?

In my community college district, and at many other schools, a full-time load is five three-credit courses per semester. I used to be offered two courses each semester, but recently, I’ve only been offered one. If this contract were in force at my school, I’d have to step down from my chapter’s executive board and my union’s board of directors since I’d no longer have the right to be in the union. Allowing the school to place limits like this on union membership seems to me to be very dangerous.

Full-time at CMU is 12 credit hours, so anyone teaching 3 credit hours will be included in the unit. The administration had wanted to limit the unit to those teaching half-time or greater.Jon CurtissAFT Michigan
