Just days after Central Michigan University’s administration and faculty union reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, its Academic Senate has narrowly voted no confidence in the institution’s president, George E. Ross, and its provost, E. Gary Shapiro, the Detroit Free Press reports. In voting Tuesday to approve the no-confidence motion, which was introduced by two student representatives on the Academic Senate, faculty members cited concerns that the administration has not been transparent. They also voiced frustration over the administration’s handling of contract talks and its push to establish a new medical school that some there view as unnecessary. The university’s Board of Trustees issued a statement backing the president and provost, the newspaper reports.
