A Canadian immigration official alleges that a number of foreign students from South Korea are abusing the federal program that lets them study and work while in Canada, according to a report by the Canwest news service. The immigration official, who works at the Canadian Embassy in Seoul, made the allegations in a memorandum that was obtained by a lawyer through a freedom-of-information request. The memo claims that many Korean students accepted by private language schools in Canada don’t show up for classes but take jobs instead, with tuition effectively becoming the price of a work permit.

I cannot say that I am surprised. I would love to join my family who moved to Canada, but cannot since first preference goes to Canadian citizens and residents. I am unwilling to move in with my family and mooch off of them until I obtain residency….so my dreams of a job with a Canadian university will remain a dream. Sounds like I should apply to and enroll in a post-graduate program there…..then maybe I could find a job!
