Several institutions, including Norfolk State and Old Dominion Universities and Tidewater Community College, have canceled classes at their campuses in and near Norfolk, Va., because of a nor’easter that is pounding the Middle Atlantic states, bringing high winds, heavy rain, power outages, and street flooding. While the storm is affecting coastal areas from North Carolina to New Jersey, the Norfolk-Virginia Beach region appears to be its focal point, a local newspaper, The Virginian-Pilot, reported. Emergency officials said water levels at high tide today and Friday are likely to produce “nuisance flooding” but not life-threatening conditions.
