California Regulators Shut Down Unaccredited College

February 16, 2012, 3:33 pm

The California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education has ordered the Institute of Medical Education to close its two campuses, in San Jose and Oakland. The college, which offered training for various medical vocations—such as dental hygienists, licensed vocational nurses, and ultrasound technicians—is unaccredited and in financial risk of failing, the bureau ruled on Wednesday. The college’s Web site says it is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. But the commission has not been a federally recognized accreditor since 2010, meaning the institutions it approves cannot receive federal student aid.

Good work!  Now, start shutting down the hundreds of underperforming graduate programs at otherwise legitimate institutions.  If they can’t document successful placement of their graduates from the past ten years, or if they can’t offer assistanceships to the vast majority of Ph.D. students in their programs, shut them down.  I think we would all be surprised by the improvement in the job market and in the relatively small number of programs remaining in each field.

Right.  It’s hard enough as it is to get good pizza delivered hot, and here you are proposing to cut the pipeline of delivery professionals.
