California Governor Signs Dream Act

October 8, 2011, 5:33 pm

Gov. Jerry Brown of California on Saturday signed the California Dream Act, which will allow thousands of illegal immigrants who graduated from high school in California to receive state financial aid, starting in January 2013. Those students can currently pay the less-expensive in-state tuition at public colleges but cannot apply for Cal Grants and other state aid. A Republican assemblyman vowed to give voters the opportunity to reverse the decision in 2012.

Well, I have no objections to this law. I just hope that the activists who rally behind these illegal immigrants realize that they have to work on their status, ultimately, or else they are dooming them to spend four years on a degree and then not be employable — a disaster for all involved.

This decision should be reversed unless out-of-state applicants get same rights.

Why is the federal government not challenging this in the courts? It appears that this is a good legal defense for other states rights to implement laws to address illegal immigration.

Actually, yes out of state students that are here legally are able to apply for financial aid. People who are here legally get priority when it comes to funding. When it comes to paying instate tuition, students who have lived in California for one year are allowed to pay instate tuition.

    Any other questions?
