University of California students and members of the faculty and staff have staged rallies on several campuses today, beginning a day of systemwide protests to draw attention to the university’s dire budget situation. The protests, which are timed to coincide with the first day of classes at eight of the system’s 10 campuses, do not appear to have caused major disruptions in course schedules, at least so far. Some faculty members are expected to join the protest by walking out of their classes at noon, Pacific time.
