Binghamton U. Suspends Adjunct’s Termination Pending Basketball Investigation

October 3, 2009, 7:30 pm

Binghamton University has decided not to terminate an adjunct instructor who complained about being pressured to give athletes better grades, pending the outcome of an audit of the university’s troubled basketball program. Last week, the university told Sally Dear, who has taught human-development courses as an adjunct for 11 years, that it would not renew her contract at the end of the semester because of budget problems. But Ms. Dear has charged that the university wanted to get rid of her, not only because she refused to give basketball players better grades, but because she spoke out about being pressured to do so in an article that was published last February in The New York Times.

Well…..it looks as though the damage control has now begun. At least someone there finally saw the light (maybe).

My ol’ undergraduate alma mater needs to look no further than down the road to St. Bonaventure U and see how it (mis)handled its own basketball scandal. The situation there brought down the coach, AD, and the university president. Binghamton needs to empower an outside special investigator immediately.

Basketballs not the only thing mishandled there. You can bet adminstration knew all about the backgrounds of the students, the coaches tactics and background. What, they were too dumb to know what everyone else did? Come on. They couldn’t care less until it became public. When it hit the news they hit damage control. They are used to it. Investigation, are you kidding? The chances of a fair and objective investigation are as likely as it is to run into a happy employee at Binghamton University. The adminstration is beyond nasty and dishonest. Talk about stating the obvious. Like the Dear firing had nothing to do with her opening her mouth. Pleeze. The players were being used by Defleur and her nasty gofers and they could care less about what happened to kids after they left BU. The players Should lawyer up and sue the university. They are the ones that were used, abused and tossed. There were no secrets. They are lucky to get out of the disgusting town. And they should be thankful to be out of the nasty place that is driven by a nasty cut throat survive at any cost mentality. Talk about not being a warm and supportive educational system. Good God it is awful.
