In another hit to the Binghamton University athletics department, the university announced today that it had placed the head men’s basketball coach, Kevin Broadus, on indefinite paid leave after he admitted to inappropriately contacting recruits, the Associated Press reported. The basketball program has been rocked by allegations of player misconduct and pressure on faculty members to inflate athletes’ grades. In the wake of those problems, an athletic director has resigned and the State University of New York system has stepped in to oversee an audit of the “integrity of the athletic and academic enterprises” at Binghamton.

Wow! My beloved SUNY-Binghamton has NCAA sanctions in the future. I love it!

Well, now Harpur, er, BU is geting closer in its quest for true D1 status — NCAA discipline. Sad to see Binghamton go this way, especially since I’m an alum. Good to see the SUNY Chancellor step in and overrule the Binghamton president on some issues (e.g., rehire the non-rehired adjunct). At least someone is putting the situation in perspective. Now let’s see what happens to the Binghamton president, who seems to be the last person standing. One only has to look west down route 17 to see what happened when St. Bonaventure U had a similar basketball scandal.
