The National Collegiate Athletic Association today placed Ball State University on probation for three years for major rules violations in the women’s tennis program. In a report the Division I Committee on Infractions said the former head coach of women’s tennis (unidentified in the report) knowingly exceeded the allowed number of practice hours, required team members to train over the summer, gave improper loans to two prospective students, and asked athletes to give false information to investigators, showing “alarming disregard for NCAA rules and student-athlete welfare.” The women’s tennis team will also be subject to self-imposed practice limits, and the former head coach is now under a three-year show-cause order — a restriction that makes it more difficult for another college to employ the coach.
