Jytte Klausen, the Brandeis political scientist whose book about the violence that followed a Danish newspaper’s publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad will be published — minus the cartoons — by Yale University Press, told The Boston Globe that she understood Yale’s decision to cut the illustrations. The book, The Cartoons That Shook the World, comes out in November. Ms. Klausen told the Globe that she had argued about the decision “for two hours.” The press feared inciting more violence; the removal of the cartoons was condemned by the American Association of University Professors.

Imagine if this were a book about a painting. I’m going to talk to you about the painting, go into every nuance of the painting’s appearance, symbolism, technique and display, I’m going to tell you all about the public reaction to it…BUT I’m not going to show it to you. It’s too offensive. Good luck Googling it!A better option would have been to publish 1 version with the picture and 1 without–give profs (and students) a choice. I bet the one with the picture would sell out before the one without did.
