Australian Professor Is Expelled From Fiji After Criticizing Its Regime

An Australian academic was arrested in Fiji and is being deported from the island nation after he criticized its military regime in interviews with news organizations, according to reports by the Australian Associated Press and The Canberra Times. The scholar, Brij Lal, was born in Fiji but has Australian citizenship and is a professor at the Australian National University, in Canberra. Mr. Lal, an expert on Fiji politics, was arrested at his home in Suva, Fiji’s capital. He told the AAP he was held in a cell for an hour, interrogated, and “told to leave the country within 24 hours or else.”
