At Tufts, No More Drinking and Running Naked on the Quad

The Naked Quad Run, a wintertime tradition at Tufts University, has run its course. So says the institution’s president, Lawrence S. Bacow, who writes in an essay in the student newspaper, The Tufts Daily, that the event has become unmanageable and is too dangerous to continue. He cites a litany of injuries and health concerns—from sprains to broken bones to alcohol-poisoning emergencies—as well as the refusal of local police departments to provide security. Mr. Bacow wants student leaders and administrators to come up with a replacement event. “Traditions are important and we want to encourage them, but they also need to be safe,” he writes. “No tradition is worth sacrificing a life to preserve.”
