Arizona College’s Hiring of Consultant Is Questioned After Flap Over Lewd E-Mails

Pima Community College, in Tucson, Ariz., is defending its payment of more than $300,000 in fees and expenses over the past five years to a Wisconsin consultant in a manner that appears to skirt college policies, but says it will not rehire him because of a scandal over lewd e-mails he sent to college administrators, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The consultant, John Crnokrak, claimed to be a childhood pal of the college’s chancellor, Roy Flores, and reported directly to Mr. Flores, who has signed and renewed his contracts for the past several years. But Mr. Flores denies that the two were friends, and a college spokesman says the chancellor had no role in his hiring. The chancellor, who had bypass surgery last fall, recently announced plans to retire by year’s end. The college has reviewed its payments to Mr. Crnokrak, and determined that only one was improper: the reimbursement of $48, plus an $8 tip, for a massage at a Tucson mall in October 2010.
