When the University of California dropped a requirement that undergraduate applicants take SAT subject tests this year, it confused high-school students and counselors who are wondering if students should take the tests anyway, the Los Angeles Times reports. The system considers the tests an optional “plus factor” in applications for admission, ambiguous language that has led many students to take the tests despite the changing requirement, the paper says. Last year, it says, nearly a third of the 312,000 students who took an SAT subject examination were in California.
