Alice S. Rossi, Sociologist Who Advocated for Women in Academe, Dies at 87

November 8, 2009, 8:24 pm

Alice S. Rossi, a past president of the American Sociological Association and an advocate for women in academe and in society, died on Tuesday, The New York Times reported. She was 87. Ms. Rossi first confronted the association’s leadership on the topic of the “status of women in sociology” in 1969. A year later, she and others described to The Chronicle the difficulty of challenging inequities in male-dominated academic departments. Ms. Rossi was the Harriet Martineau professor of sociology emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, where she taught from 1974 until her retirement, in 1991. She had previously held appointments at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, the Johns Hopkins University, and Goucher College.
