A student who had been facing expulsion from Lake Michigan College as a registered sex offender has won an appeal to stay on the campus, The Herald Palladium, a Michigan newspaper, reports. The student was one of several who were scrutinized after the college’s Board of Trustees approved a rule that restricted the enrollment of felons and sex offenders but allowed such students to seek individual reviews of their cases. The current rule replaced a policy that banned all sex offenders of children from the campus, a blanket approach that raised questions about its legality. The student who won the appeal, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, has been attending classes since the beginning of the year.
