Adjunct instructors who teach in the Community College System of New Hampshire have voted to unionize, the Associated Press reports, citing the state’s Public Employee Labor Relations Board as certifying the results of a union election. The adjuncts will be represented by the State Employees’ Association, which already represents the system’s full-time faculty members and other employees.

Congratulations. Any movement by adjuncts and contingents to gain well-deserved respect and power is welcome at any time, but particularly now as the national debate about higher education gains momentum and yet so seldom mentions the adcom community that provides the core of the higher ed mission, teaching 70% of higher ed sections. I am so glad to hear that NHCC adcons defeated the many loud voices in New Hampshire calling for business, and I mean nature-red-in-tooth-and-claw type business—as usual. Dr. Alan Trevithick, adjunct, Fordham University and Westchester Community College.

Congrats! Wishing you years and years of success advocating for your colleagues and, by extension, your students, and higher ed in general in New Hampshire.
