AAUP Ties Penn State Scandal to ‘Erosion of Faculty Governance’

The American Association of University Professors’ National Council has issued a statement linking “the steady erosion of faculty governance” at Pennsylvania State University to the child-sex-abuse scandal there. The statement argues that genuine shared governance, “which involves meaningful participation by the faculty in all aspects of an institution,” including the oversight of athletics programs, could have resulted in the alleged crimes’ being reported to the police years ago. “At Penn State,” it says, “and indeed at other institutions across the nation where athletics programs have burgeoned outside of faculty governance structures, the potential for rampant abuse of power remains.”
