The Mississippi University for Women has admitted men for decades, but whether to give it a more gender-inclusive name has been a subject of debate. The institution’s president is among those advocating a new monicker, and today she made known her choice; she would like it to become Reneau University, in honor of an alumna who had pressed state officials to establish a college for women 150 years ago. Any change would have to be approved by the state’s higher-education board and the Legislature.

Welty University (as in Eudora) is better, a lot better.
–a Mississippian stuck in Louisiana.

I think had anyone BUT Claudia Limbert suggest this, it may have been better accepted. As a graduate of MUW (with numerous aunts and cousins who are MSCW graduate and a grandmother was a graduate of II&C), I understand that things change. I took my daughter to MUW this past Saturday – and left a happy new “W” girl. She called me Monday, not at all pleased to learn that she may be attending Reneau University in the near future.

Will the quality of the education change? I think not. Will one of the best buys in education cease to exist? I think not. I didn’t attend the “W”, but my son did. A name change is a minor hiccup. Let’s move on. Also, stuck in Louisiana.
