Illinois legislators passed a vast public-works spending bill this summer that included $40-million for an extension campus of Chicago State University, reports the Chicago Tribune. However, the university hadn’t requested the money, which was championed by a state senator from Chicago, and the interim president says he was unaware that he was opening a new campus until he read about it in a newspaper.

The Chi-Town Daily News first reported on this story in early June. Here’s our coverage:http://www.chitowndailynews.org/Chicago_news/Senator_wants_West_Side_CSU_campus_open_in_two_years,28083http://www.chitowndailynews.org/Chicago_news/Quinn_signs_bill_with_money_for_new_CSU_campus,29962

This is great news but again the taxpayers are subsidizing this. Not that it is wrong just that it is a one time deal. There needs to be a self-sustaining model put in place that helps generate revenue outside of tuition, fees and taxes. They need to adapt to this new economy. They need to see where alternative revenue streams can come from and stop waiting for surprise gifts. Give a man a fish…

A much more URGENT need is to support the MAP program that awards Monetary assistance to many students of low income. I know that thousands of these students will have to cut short their studies because the Legislature failed in a number of ways regarding MAP. There is still a greatest danger lurking that there will no longer be any funds available in the spring 2010. This is shortsighted and shameful handling of a most urgent of matters. There is still a slim hope that the Governor may intervene to save the program and with it the future of thousands of students in Illinois. I am so sorry to see our Illinois Legislature is either so disorganized or completely out of touch on such Educational and delicate matters as the Monetary Assistance Program (MAP). Papacosta

It appears that there is no communication between the interim President and the State Senator who authored the money bill. You have to wonder if the State Senator is looking for a job as a University President?

Am I the only one who thinks that 99% of the dough will wind up in the hands of the legislator’s buddies in the building trades?

I think the state senator is looking for a job in the Obama Administration.
