Seven scientists at universities and research centers shared the 2011 Shaw Prizes, three $1-million awards that were announced today by the Hong Kong-based Shaw Prize Foundation. The awards went to: Enrico Costa of Italy’s National Institute of Astrophysics and Gerald J. Fishman of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, in astronomy; Jules A. Hoffmann of France’s University of Strasbourg, Ruslan M. Medzhitov of Yale University, and Bruce A. Beutler of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., in life science and medicine; and Demetrios Christodoulou of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and Richard S. Hamilton of Columbia University, in mathematical sciences. The winners will receive their prizes in September.
