Five current and former campus police officers have filed federal lawsuits against Austin Peay State University, in Clarksville, Tenn., alleging retaliation after they reported sexual discrimination in an internal investigation, the Associated Press reports. The university had disciplined its police chief, Lantz Biles, following the investigation, according to court documents. He then “attempted to divide the department and discredit anyone who made charges or corroborated the charges as a witness,” including by firing one officer. Both the university and Mr. Biles declined to comment, the AP said.

A mature society cannot allow incidences of this kind to suggest that (1) it engages in coverups, (2) there is an internal struggle for power, and (3) it is prepared to sacrifice the confidence and legitimacy of its people/systems/history for what might be placidly referred to as the “plasticity of winning at all costs.”
