2012 Will Bring Growth in Giving, Fund Raisers Say

January 31, 2012, 2:09 pm

Donations to colleges and schools rose an estimated 4.4 percent in 2011 and will increase an additional 4.6 percent this year, a twice-yearly survey of fund raisers has found. But the survey, conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, also found that fund raisers had revised their estimates of 2011′s growth in giving downward by more than one percentage point over the course of the year, from 5.6 percent to 4.4. For 2012 fund raisers at private colleges predicted 4.3-percent growth in donations, while their counterparts at public institutions foresaw a 5.2-percent increase and those at community colleges and private secondary schools said giving would rise between 4.5 and 4.8 percent.

I wrote a quick review earlier this week, with many of the same suggestions for improvement as you have. Here’s to hoping that APA becomes an option in the near future. The collaborative opportunities offered with Google docs is crucial for group projects. Hopefully the research and citing features will continue to improve, as you have suggested.

I had the same thoughts about the “research” simply being a websearch. I hadn’t noticed the citation option. Thanks for the column!

Thank you, Amanda! Very good and thorough review, and the graphic shots were very helpful in showing what you were writing. It sounds like they may have taken your suggestions – let’s hope so!

Good review! I found it underwhelming, other than looking for a quick reference maybe. I like the idea of it and t did make me think (as a librarian) how good it would be if we could integrate some kind of side search for library resources alongside our campus MS Office Word but I suspect that’s wishful thinking….

Let’s hope that someone in Google knows how to research…and might follow these suggestions. All we need is “another” style of formatting. :-)
