This could have far-reaching implications in the future of educational grant funding. Not good stuff -
Are we really at a point where the stumbling block is financial aid for the neediest students? How can anyone who blocks Pell funding pretend to be in favor of access in education?
Once again we teach our children the old story of King John – steal from the poor and give to the rich.
While I completely agree that Pell Grant ought not to be the political football that’s tossed around during the debt limit debate, the real problem isn’t the Pell Grant or student financial aid, but the formula that’s used to determine eligibility. The more the feds “simplify” the application (the FAFSA) the less useful it becomes in its ability to measure financial strength and the more students become eligible for federal grant dollars. Correct that problem and spending will come down and only those who really are the neediest will receive scarce grant resources.
This is directly contradictory to any desire to make higher education available to all citizens. It is one of many changes that appear likely to keep higher education for the “haves”, and assure that the “have-nots” will not be able to play.
