The efficiency and reputations of departments would be greatly enhanced if the smaller departments were condensed and shifted to fewer universities.  Why do we need major xyz on every campus when very few students enroll in that field.  A state system could easily say this one major is offered at campus x and this major is offered at campus y.  It would reduce costs substantially.  Two negative consequences would be faculty layoffs and student complaints.

Second, there are approximately 2,890 colleges and universities in the U.S.  This number should be reduced.  In the previous article, Our Lady of the Holly Cross has insurmountable problems and only 1,200 students.  Close the campus and allow the students to transfer to another campus.  The same can be said for a very large number of campus which should be closed.  This would allow greater efficiency, effectiveness, and quality for larger more prestigious campuses.

Third, the U.S. global ranking for higher education has dropped to 26.  This is disgraceful.  Allowing universities to excel in certain areas would help regain America’s standing in higher education.
