Open Thread Wednesday! Planning for Summer?

April 20, 2011, 11:00 am

Each Wednesday, ProfHacker hosts an open thread discussion. Sometimes a specific topic is announced, and sometimes the discussion is completely open. Please remember to abide by our commenting and community guidelines. Thanks!

Hey, it’s Wednesday! I think you know what that means. It’s time for an open thread! Last August, we posted our lists of things that helped us get through the summer. Today, we’d like to hear from you about what plans you’re making for Summer 2011. Specifically, we’d like to hear about your plans involving fun things: a vacation, a family get-together, a new workout regimen, a class you’ll be taking just for the heck of it . . . anything that helps you recharge your batteries. Many academics–myself included–are still expected to show up to work on campus for some or all of the summer, but we can still try to use these in-between months to enjoy ourselves.

Let us hear from you in the comments!

My summer will be chock-full of post-graduation, DIY, learn-what-I-wished-I’d-learned-in-the-MLIS projects. On the list: through comprehension of scholarly communication issues, Web Hosting 101 with Julie Meloni, coding for dummies, more hands-on with WordPress and Omeka, data wrangling, and maybe write something worthwhile and try to get it published.

My “fun” will be attending my first THATCamp at CHNM, ALA in New Orleans and spending some time outdoors in the dead heat of a Tallahassee summer (hopefully near water). I also have a number of pet projects and hobbies I’d love to be able to spend some time on – playing drums, watching movies, various photo/video art projects, and re-writing my MA thesis. That last one will never happen.

One question in the spirit of open thread Wednesday – how do you all mangage to link back to 4+ previous articles at the beginning of each post? Are you all really that familiar with ALL of the content that goes up here? You must have a really fantastic tagging/search function somewhere.

Thanks! Look forward to meeting some of you around this summer and in the future!

Terror at missing someone else’s prior posts, and the concomitant behind-the-scenes mockery, is how I find pre-existing material to link to. :-)

Actually, ProfHacker metadata is a Known Issue, and one that I’m hoping to spend some cycles addressing this summer.

Is Mr. Weisenfeld’s statement that there have been “hundreds” of honorary degrees from CUNY, just within the time span of his own years on the Board, correct? Perhaps, then, this is part of the problem. If the Board is asked to vote on “hundreds” of honoraries, it will be inevitable that there will be embarrassments, mistakes, or at the least poorly-deliberated choices.
