Open Thread Wednesday: Guilty Pleasures?

December 8, 2010, 11:00 am

A hand holding up a relatively small bullhorn. We’ve all got ‘em. Guilty pleasures, that is. Mine include Little Debbie Oatmeal “Creme” Pies, which I’m sure contain nothing at all that could be considered healthy. For some people, their guilty pleasure is a book. For others, it’s a movie.

You don’t actually have to feel guilty about these pleasures, mind you. They’re just things we enjoy that don’t exactly fit our idea of who we are. Winter break provides us with many opportunities to indulge: holiday food, blockbuster Hollywood movies, video games we’ve been longing to play we’ve purchased for the kids. These things provide a kind of release; they can help restore balance to our lives. You don’t want to overdo it, of course. It’s not like I go around eating nothing but Oatmeal “Creme” Pies for every meal. In moderation, however, guilty pleasures can be quite helpful.

What are your guilty pleasures? Let’s hear from you in the comments!

Young adult vampire novels. Twilight and Vampire Academy being my favorites. Yes, I know it’s shameful.

Strawberry pop-tarts; Grand Tourismo 4 on Playstation (the only reason I own a game console); now and then I read a little bit of Walter Benjamin (though they have no intellectual value to me now, the “Theses on History” make me feel better).

Junk food! You know, like Doritos :D And a comedy.

I can’t find Doritos in Malaysia, so what I do is I buy a big bag that contains small packets of certain junk food (chips) and whenever I’m tired of working at the computer desk, I much on these junk food and watch a comedy :D

Donuts. Oh, I love me some donuts. And looking at lolcats online (or should that be “on teh interwebs?”). These are the complete antithesis of my usual careful eating habits and general productivity–which is why they’re guilty pleasures–and thus keep me sane.
