If one of your hats is “web designer”–even if it’s one you wear infrequently–then you’ll want to bookmark Doctype.com, a wiki-ish* site that allows users to post questions–complete with screenshots!–about problems with web design, CSS, or browser compatibility issues.
Other users post answers, which are rated by the community as a whole. Here’s how the site describes its advantages:
We’ve got a few neat features that make Doctype better than other CSS sites and mailing lists… • Each question has browser (or email) compatibility screenshots • All content on Doctype is editable so it’s always up-to-date • You vote on answers so the best ones rise to the top • All CSS and HTML code is archived, along with the screenshots
If you’ve ever found yourself baffled by the intricacies of cross-browser implementations of Cascading Style Sheets, this is an excellent resource.
This shouldn’t be confused with Google’s doctype project, which is? was? also a wiki-ish project to document web practices. Doctype.com is more conversational; doctype is more of a reference.
