The NCAA has imposed recruiting restrictions on Louisiana State University, along with a reduction in athletic scholarships and one year of probation, for rules violations in its football program.
The ruling, set forth in a report released Tuesday afternoon by the Division I Committee on Infractions, focuses on the actions of a former assistant football coach at LSU. In his recruitment of a prospective player in 2008 and 2009, the report said, he exceeded the NCAA’s limits on phone calls, provided lodging and transportation beyond what NCAA policy allows, and later attempted to cover up the breaches.
The latter misstep did not go unnoticed by the committee, which just last week singled out officials at Georgia Tech for impeding an investigation into rules violations in its football and men’s basketball programs. In LSU’s case, the committee concluded that the former assistant coach’s behavior constituted unethical conduct. It also levied a “show cause” penalty against him, under which he is forbidden, among other things, to have contact with recruits or their families for one year.
