UC-Berkeley Hopes $113-Million Gift Will Lure Top Profs

The University of California at Berkeley has announced that it will receive a $113-million gift from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to be used to hire top professors for 100 endowed chairs, Erin Strout reports on The Chronicle’s Web site:

The gift is a challenge grant that is intended to match other private donations and to total $220-million over the next seven years. In addition to the newly endowed chairs, the money will be used to pay professors salaries that are “competitive with those at the best private schools,” according to a university news release.
