Thanks to the Freakonomics blog for linking to a Reuters article about how employers in the Ivory Coast are getting more workers to show up on time: arrive on time, win a house.

You work fewer than fifty hours per week, and you don’t bring work home with you. You spend four weeks each year living in the mountains. You are tired because of parties and visitors.

Why is this posted in “Research Centered”? Why is this tagged “exhaustion, work hangover”?

How could anyone work less than fifty hours a week and have the temerity to call herself exhausted?  Well, one possibility is that such an individual actually works intensely and productively for those hours.  I admire those with the discipline and focus  to hone in on what needs to be done, do it with beautiful economy, and then call it a day.

By contrast, nothing is more tedious than our colleagues who boast about their 80-hour-work weeks, who lug home bulging briefcases every evening (then leave them sitting by the front door till the next morning), who grade papers while watching the football game and feel virtuous about “working all day Sunday,”  who spend hours trolling the Commentary section of the Chronicle looking for articles to write snarky comments about.

The academic world needs more people who are honest about seeking work/life balance, who can feel good about taking a bubble bath after working for eight straight hours, and who aren’t afraid to go to the mountains for the weekend.  The academic world needs fewer purse-lipped self-appointed guardians of the workaholic flame.

Minerva–you are aptly named.  Thank you for your wisdom.

For some of us who are introverts, constantly dealing with people is extremely exhausting. I very much identify with the need for “recovery time.” The quotation from the blog describes me perfectly.

Isn’t it a sad state of the world that we feel guilty about just taking a day off just because we need a down day?

Roller derby!  No wonder you’re exhausted!

PS:  advice from an older woman:  if you feel tired all the time, it could possibly be due to a number of physical conditions, among which chronic fatique syndrome, or a touch of anemia, or your thyroid not doing its job, etc etc etc,   So, please, go see your doctor.

That cat looks just like my cat.
