William Flores, deputy secretary of the New Mexico Higher Education Department and former provost at New Mexico State University, is expected to be named the next president of the University of Houston’s downtown campus, the Houston Chronicle reports. Assuming he gets the nod from the university’s governing board next week, he’ll replace longtime campus president Max Castillo on July 1.
The Kansas Board of Regents has picked Bernadette Gray-Little, executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina, to be the next chancellor of University of Kansas, The Kansas City Star reports. She will be the first woman and first African-American to lead the university.

Florida Atlantic University will lay off 30 workers (including five faculty members from the College of Engineering), leave 140 jobs vacant, and drop 45 majors as it attempts to slash $16.7-million from its budget, the Palm Beach Post reports.
Miami Dade College announced last Thursday that it will lay off 111 staff members and shed another 86 open positions in an effort to counter cuts in state funding, the Miami Herald reports. The college also plans to eliminate up to eight programs.
The University of Redlands fired 29 administrative and staff employees, and trimmed the hours or stipends of another 28 employees last week, the Redlands Daily Facts reports.
The University of North Carolina System is bracing for additional layoffs as a proposed 11 percent budget cut goes before the state legislature, NBC17 reports.
