Brown University joins fellow Ivy League university Cornell in announcing a temporary hiring freeze for all staff and administrative positions, The Chronicle’s News Blog reports. Meanwhile the University of Minnesota announced this week that it will curb faculty and staff hiring indefinitely, except for open positions that are deemed essential, the Star Tribune reports.

Professors at Florida Atlantic University are demanding a 10-percent raise — the same percentage awarded to FAU President Frank Brogan — instead of the 1-percent raise and one-time $1,000 bonus the university has offered them, The Palm Beach Post’s Extra Credit blog reports.
Meanwhile professors in Massachusetts are also calling for higher salaries, The Republican reports. According to a report issued last year, professors at the nine Massachusetts state colleges are underpaid compared to their peers in other industrial states where the cost of living is lower.
