Columbia University has named Claude M. Steele, a social-psychology professor at Stanford University, as its next provost, The Chronicle’s News Blog reports. See a Columbia University press release for additional details.
David M. Dooley, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Montana State University, has been tapped to lead the University of Rhode Island, the Providence Business News reports. He succeeds Robert L. Carothers, who is stepping down at the end of June after 18 years on the job.
The Kansas Board of Regents has picked Steven A. Scott, Pittsburg State University’s provost and vice president of academic affairs, to be the institution’s next president, effective July 1. See the university’s Web site for details.

New Mexico Highlands University faculty members are getting a much-needed raise, the Associated Press reports.
The Providence Journal reports that Christopher Nirschel, son of the president of Roger Williams University, resigned last Monday from his job as an RWU fund raiser just two days after he was arrested on assault charges in Hoboken, N.J. His hiring last fall led to cries of nepotism from some students and faculty members, the newspaper notes.
The University of Washington will cut 13 jobs from its athletics department, The Seattle Times reports. Four coaches of the swim program are among those on the chopping block.
The University of Maine will sack 32 employees, cut 77 vacant positions, and reduce hours for another 31 full-time workers, in an effort to cut $8.8-million from its budget. See a university press release for details.
Eastern Washington University plans to eliminate 110 positions in an effort to reduce its budget by $13.3-million, KXLY.com reports. While layoffs will be necessary, about 45 percent of the job cuts will come from leaving jobs vacant.
Loyola University Medical Center, in Chicago, will slash over 440 jobs in effort to save millions of dollars, the Chicago Tribune reports:
The cuts will be across the board, including 31 nurses, managers, and staff at both the Loyola University Medical Center and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. Of the 443 positions, 372 are from the medical center and 71 are from the medical school.
