Cornell University is the latest institution in New York to suspend hiring, Bloomberg.com reports.
Despite the hiring freeze on state agencies announced by New York Gov. David A. Paterson back in July, some universities in N.Y. are filling positions, The Buffalo News reports.
Unfortunately, the hiring freeze at the State University of New York at Buffalo that was declared in August will be extended, Business First of Buffalo reports.
Meanwhile, The San Jose Mercury News reports that Stanford University may cut some jobs and limit raises, while Florida State University’s president has issued a new hiring freeze, according to a local Florida television station.

The Krakauer book about Tillman is outstanding (and chilling).

There is an anecdote about a student, which is interesting, but you say in your previous post that you don’t write about specific students. How do you draw these boundaries?

An interesting perspective – one that I hadn’t thought of given my institutional context and professional identity, where wars in general, and these wars in particular, *are* the subjects I teach to future officers. I don’t harbor any illusions that my teaching, per se, has life or death consequenses, but I do know the stakes are high for these young men and women. Regardless of what a student’s future career holds, it seems critical that classrooms are places where ideas are tested and challenged – intellectual combat zones, perhaps, that prepare for critical and flexible thinking. in the military it is often said that reputations are formed on the basis of your subordinate’s performance. There’s something to that.
I would also suggest the following, for many of the same reasons–and, I think, some of these do a better job at getting at the leadership angle than even the ones TR mentions above.
