Faculty Jobs Rise in Foreign Languages, Fall in English

The Modern Language Association predicts that the number of faculty job openings in foreign languages will rise by 4.3 percent this academic year over the number of jobs on offer last year, John Gravois reports on The Chronicle’s Web site. Applicants who can teach Arabic and Chinese are in greater demand this year, as enrollments in those areas have increased significantly since 2002, he writes.

Unfortunately, the forecast in English is less sunny this year. The number of English faculty jobs is expected to fall by 4.1 percent — from 1,793 last year to 1,720 this year, Gravois notes.
