Coming Exodus or Exaggeration?

September 19, 2008, 2:49 pm

An article in the Pasadena Star-News predicts that baby boomers will soon start retiring in droves and warns universities to start preparing. (Yeah, right, you snicker. I’ll believe it when I see it.)

Well, at least one university isn’t taking any chances. Miami University, in Ohio, anticipates that 50 percent of its faculty will retire in the next five to seven years, but the administration hopes to minimize the impact of a possible mass exodus by adding 100 new professorships over the next four years, that university’s student newspaper reports.

According to Brad Bundy, Miami’s associate vice president of university advancement, 11 new professorships were created in the last year, bringing the current total to 51, the reporter, Kelly Fryberger, writes.

What steps, if any, is your institution taking to prepare?
