Black Women in Philosophy

September 28, 2007, 1:42 pm

Did you know that only about 100 of the 10,000 academic philosophers in North America are black? And that fewer than 30 black female philosophers have full-time jobs in the discipline? Read Robin Wilson’s report on the inaugural meeting of the Collegium of Black Women Philosophers in The Chronicle’s special issue on diversity in academe.

Just FYI: The ACE Fellows program costs a lot more than $25K. That’s just the program fee. The sponsoring institution also pays the fellow’s salary and benefits for a year while he or she participates in the program full time. There are also a number of related expenses that the fellow winds up paying. I’m not complaining — it’s a terrific program, probably the best administrative training program around, and most of the people who have gone through it speak of it very enthusiastically. But it’s good to be realistic about the costs.

Your essay made me laugh – and you make a good point. Particularly with the “graying” of senior administration and the anticipated need for so many new administrators to step up into these roles in the coming years, there does need to be more attainable and realistic means of “training” academic administrators.

I sympathize with your desire to get into a focused environment that doesn’t feel like a Dilbert nightmare.  But I have to say, in a period of austerity for faculty and high costs for students, “more cruises for administrators” may not be the most politic rallying cry. ;)

Most everyone in higher education administration knows about the big training venues for continuing education. You make a good point. Now,i feel free to share my idea or webstie: http://www.northfaceinline.us with the folks at online. Thanks.
