Black Ex-Coach Wins Discrimination Suit

A Louisiana jury has ordered the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to pay $2-million to Jerry L. Baldwin, a former head football coach at the university who said he was dismissed because of his race, Brad Wolverton reports on The Chronicle’s Web site.

Baldwin, the first African-American head coach at a major Louisiana university, was fired in 2001 after his team compiled a 6-27 win-loss record during his three seasons on the job, Wolverton writes. The university, which blames Baldwin’s poor record and low attendance at the team’s games for his dismissal, has said it will appeal the ruling, Wolverton writes. Read more.
