I don’t know why people don’t realize that giving someone encouragement or a compliment doesn’t take anything away from you. I try really hard to build a positive culture where we’re all helping each other along.

It’s too bad you find more positives in derby than academia. It makes me sad too.

Wonderful post. I have been thinking similar thoughts lately due to a part-time gig I’ve been working as a night janitor. I cannot express how much better my life has gotten since I have begun working alongside other custodians, as opposed to my PhD peers at the office. I hadn’t even realized how difficult it was to withstand the constant scathing criticism and superficial stick-measuring that is simply life in the academy… until I began spending time with people who can’t be bothered by such things.

Scrubbing a toilet has become the highlight of my days. Something is certainly amiss in the Humanities–the economic attack on the faculty as a whole has trickled down and cultivated terrible, angry feelings at nearly every level.

As a fellow smackademic (2 years in derby, nearly 10 working in academia), I very much enjoyed your post!

Yo, Roller Derby... - December 7, 2011 at 4:15 pm

This is so awesome, thank you for posting this! It’s funny how there are SO many women in roller derby who have advanced degrees or are academics. My former team alone had several, and some ivy leaguers! Great insight. :) (this comment by @robinautt)
