Universities in East Asia Fail to Respond to Labor Market

Higher-education institutions in developing countries in East Asia are not training their graduates in the skills that companies are looking for, says a World Bank report, “Putting Higher Education to Work: Skills and Research for Growth in Asia.” It says China, Indonesia, and other nations have to make their universities more responsive to the labor market and the economy. Nor are universities generating the technological innovation or other research ideas that spur business growth, the report adds. The World Bank says the main reason for the problems is that universities are too disconnected from corporations, other research institutions, and primary and secondary schools.
