The University of Edinburgh is ending a research deal with Bahrain’s Ministry of Education after human-rights and student groups objected to the plan. “The University of Edinburgh has concluded that we shall not proceed with this work,” a university spokesman said in a brief e-mail message. Earlier this month, the university and the ministry announced they had signed an agreement to develop a network of scientific research on business and industry in the small Middle Eastern kingdom, according to the Bahrain News Agency. The Bahrain Justice and Development Movement, an advocacy organization based in Britain, says the arrangement was scrapped because of protests against the university working with a regime accused of violating human rights.
