A police investigation into an alleged $1.2-million fraud at York University is looking into apparent improper payments for campus construction and maintenance billed to the institution between 2007 and early 2010, reports The Globe and Mail, quoting unnamed sources. The sources told the newspaper that criminal charges are expected; that the investigation involves “a few key individuals” who have left the university, including a former senior employee; and that the construction companies are not involved in what appears to be overbilling for work not done. York issued a statement last week, saying it had commissioned a forensic audit by an outside firm, but offered no details of the alleged fraud. It said it had turned everything over to the police.
