A recent university graduate in Thailand has been detained for posting material on his blog that insults the country’s royal family, The Nation reports. The graduate of Bangkok’s Kasetsart University was reportedly turned in by the university’s vice rector for students affairs. According to The Nation, the vice rector said he was pressured by Kasetsart’s University Council to take action against the student to preserve the institution’s “reputation.” The student allegedly wrote the blog post when he was a senior at the university, and the material was uncovered by Kasetsart students.
Insulting the king and members of the royal family is against the law in Thailand. Critics say the rule stifles academic freedom and political dissent. In recent months, a history professor at Bangkok’s prestigious Thammasat University was charged with insulting the royal family for suggesting that the monarchy be reformed.
