Some British Universities Will Face Closure, Vice Chancellors Believe

Most British vice chancellors believe that the country’s budget crisis will lead to the demise of some universities, but few believe that their own institutions will face the ax, a new survey suggests. Nearly 75 percent of the respondents to the poll, conducted by the PA Consulting Group, said they thought it was “very likely” or “probable” that some universities would fail, Times Higher Education reported. University heads who have met with Britain’s new higher-education minister, David Willetts, said they believe he is more likely to allow struggling institutions to fail than the previous government. Many institutions plan to expand their international presence to improve their financial position, the BBC reported. Foreign students pay higher tuition than British or European Union students.
