Long dominated by researchers in Europe and North America, the social sciences are gaining ground in Latin America and Asia, according to a report by the International Social Sciences Council and Unesco. European nations, Canada, and the United States still publish 75 percent of the social-science journals worldwide, but in countries like Brazil, China, and India such research is developing quickly. In Brazil, for example, the number of social-science researchers has tripled in the last decade, and in China, government spending on the social sciences has grown between 15 and 20 percent annually since 2003. Indeed, China has started new partnerships with American universities to bolster its scholarly work in demography, sociology, and related subjects.
