Science Professors at U. of Delhi Protest New Semester System

September 15, 2010, 3:00 pm

Undergraduate science students at the University of Delhi, one of India’s top institutions, are trapped in a battle between its vice chancellor, who has introduced a semester system similar to Western universities, and faculty members who oppose it. The professors have refused to teach 13 undergraduate science courses since the academic session began in mid-July, reports the India Edu News Web site. Examinations for the courses are scheduled to start in November, but students at the university are ill-equipped to take them because of absent professors. The faculty members say the new system has been introduced in an autocratic manner, while Deepak Pental, the university’s vice chancellor, says it is a key part of modernizing the Indian institution.
