The Association for Civil Rights in Israel has demanded the reinstatement of a professor whose class at Ben-Gurion University was canceled after he spoke out in the classroom against same-sex couples, the news site Ynet reported. The professor, Yeruham Leavitt, who is 70 and retired, was among the founders of the university’s school of pharmacy and was teaching one class in medical ethics. After several students complained about his comments, the university canceled the class and said he would not be engaged to teach again. Hagai Elad, the head of the civil-rights association, protested the university’s action, saying, “Academic freedom is also the freedom to express oneself outrageously — especially when regarding opinion.”
