Review Panel Says Terrorist Suspect Was Not ‘Radicalized’ at British University

October 8, 2010, 9:59 am

An independent review panel at University College London says there was no evidence to suggest that a former student who is accused of trying to blow up a passenger jet bound for Detroit in 2009 was radicalized while on campus. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is on trial in a U.S. federal court, spent three years studying engineering at University College London, where he also served as president of the Islamic student society. His enrollment at the university raised questions about whether British universities are potential breeding grounds for extremist activity. The panel did recommend that the institution review the process by which guest speakers are invited to campus.
